Ruth Evelyn Helm

Ruth Evelyn (Ertel) Helm, 91, of North Vernon, passed away at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2016.

Born on July 10, 1925, in Jennings County, Mrs. Helm was the daughter of William and Frances Ertel. She married Charles “Chick” Helm on May 10, 1948, and he preceded her in death on February 13, 2011.

A homemaker, Mrs. Helm had also worked at Shanna Styles, and was co-owner of The Helm Restaurant. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Psi Iota Xi Sorority in North Vernon.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy (Bob) Howe and Susan (Ted) Westerman, both of North Vernon; three sons, Steve (Lila), John (Eileen), and Tony (Sarah) Helm, all of North Vernon; sister, Helen Rogers; 14 grandchildren, Kevin and Chris Helm and Heather (Bob) Hanson of Florida, Brandon (Carrie) Helm, Erin (Lance) Treadway, Jill (Jon) Leach, Deanna (Jeff) Jackson, Becky Jackson and Zach Seal, all of North Vernon, Carrie (Robbie) Owns, Jonathan and Jeremy Helm of Indianapolis, Jammie Helm of Columbus, Spencer Robbins of Bloomington, and Kyla (Sam) McCollum of New Albany; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chick; son, Jeff Helm, who passed away on February 12, 1994; brothers, Raymond and Bill Ertel; and sisters, Virginia Clark, Norma Carnes, Hilda and Margaret Ertel.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Mary’s School or Premier Hospice.
