John W. “Groundhog” Helm, 69, of Scipio passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 18, 2020, at Sawyer – Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. A private memorial service will be conducted the following day.
In compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidelines, only 50 people will be allowed in the funeral home at a time and masks are required. We thank our families for their continued cooperation during these difficult times as we strive to help keep our community safe.
Born November 22, 1951, in Seymour, John was the son of Charles “Chick” and Ruth Evelyn Ertel Helm. He married Eileen Childs on January 8, 1983.
John worked most of his life in the construction business. He was currently employed at Morgan’s Lawn Care & Land Scaping. He was a member of Brown’s Corner Church where he served as a trustee, and the Moose Lodge. Showing off his classic car, a GTO, playing golf, and working around his property were some of his favorite pastimes. Spending time with his family was number one on his list of favorite things to do.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Helm of Scipio; sons, Jonathan (Amanda) Helm of Zionsville, Jeremy (Ashley) Helm of Indianapolis, and Brandon (Carrie)) Helm of North Vernon; daughter, Heather (Bob) Hanson of North Fort Meyers, FL; brothers, Steve (Lila), and Tony (Sarah) Helm of North Vernon; sisters, Judy (Bob) Howe, and Susan (Ted) Westerman of North Vernon; grandchildren, Hailey, Breana, Kjia, Payton, Brooks, and Harper; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Jeff Helm.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Chick Helm Scholarship Fund at the Jennings County Community Foundation.
