John Copeland, 89, North Vernon, passed away at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30, 2022, at St. Vincent Jennings County Hospital.
A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. till the start of the service. Rev. Frank McGee will officiate. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery at 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022.
Born on January 27, 1933, in Madison, John was the loving son of Alex and Marie (Buchanan) Copeland but was raised by his loving grandmother, Sylvia Buchanan. He was united in marriage to Shirley Blasdel in 1957. She survives.
John had grown up in the Manville area. He attended the old Central High School in Madison; upon graduation he joined the US Navy during the Korean War. He served on the USS Hopewell Ship. After his discharge from the service in 1955, he went to work for Cummins where he was employed for 41 years. John and his family were in the antique business and he enjoyed attending auctions and going to flea markets. He liked all sports, especially IU basketball and the Cincinnati Reds. John was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Shirley Copeland of North Vernon, survivors include sons, Darren (Paula) Copeland of North Vernon, Kevin (Betty) Copeland of Homosassa, FL, and John Trent Copeland of North Vernon; daughter, Teresa (Jim) Torline of North Vernon; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Marie Copeland; his grandmother, Sylvia Buchanan; brothers, Robert and Victor Copeland.
