Eleanor K. Eaken

Eleanor K. Eaken, 73, of North Vernon, passed away at 10:35 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the Waters of Clifty in Madison.

A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service. Rev. Lewis Wright will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service. There will be a graveside service held at a later date. Cremation was chosen.    

Born on August 7, 1949, in Milan, Eleanor was the loving daughter of Harry and Barbara (Klippel) Purkhiser. She was united in marriage to Anthony Eaken on October 2, 1971. He survives.

Eleanor graduated from North Vernon High School in 1967. She had worked throughout the years as a beautician, teacher’s aide at Sand Creek Elementary School, and as a Home Health Aide for Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Eleanor enjoyed working crossword puzzles, and hidden picture books. She loved going Christmas shopping, sewing, and painting. Most important to her was spending her free time with her grandchildren and family.

In addition to her husband, Anthony Eaken of North Vernon, she is survived by son, Andrew R. Eaken of North Vernon; daughter, Elizabeth “Kassie” Eaken of North Vernon; grandchildren, Bryce A. Eaken, Calista J. Eaken, and Dylan R. Eaken; sister, Tracy (Andy) Eder of North Vernon; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Barbara Purkhiser; sisters, Phyllis Hunt, and Bobbie Maddux.

Memorials can be made through the funeral home to the Gentiva Hospice.
