Doris J. Shaw

February 16, 1925 ~ May 21, 2021 (age 96)

Doris J. Shaw, 96, of Vernon, passed away at 11:26 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 2021, at Autumn Trace of North Vernon.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date. Cremation was chosen. Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service are entrusted with the arrangements.

Born on February 16, 1925, in St. Paul, Doris was the loving daughter of Hanson and Mary Elizabeth (Garrett) McClusky. She was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Shaw in 1944. He preceded her in death in 1996.

Doris was known for many things in her life, she was a very independent woman whom stood firmly in her belief in equality for women. She lived to serve others in any way she possibly could, being one of the most selfless ladies in her act of kindness and extending a helping hand to anyone in need. Doris took pride in her little blue house Bob and she made together, where the door was always open and the invite for a freshly made glass of lemonade or iced tea and a meal was always on the table. It was a place for laughter and making memories with family and friends that extended from her children’s generation to her great grandchildren’s generation. She was the best cookie maker in all of Jennings County. Doris was very proud of her boys, Jim and Dave, doting on all their accomplishments throughout the years. She co-owned and operated the Shaw’s Monument Shop in Vernon. She was a member of Vernon Baptist Church and the card club. Doris loved quilting and crocheting. Doris had one true love in her life, Bob whom she lost many years ago. However, she always knew she would see him again one day and was anxiously waiting for that reunion. On Friday, Doris got that beautiful reunion with her best friend and love of her life, Bob. What a glorious day that must have been.

Doris is survived by sons, Jim and Dave Shaw both of North Vernon; grandchildren, Lisa Barlow of North Vernon, Cathy Vawter of Vernon, and Josh Shaw of Vernon; great grandchildren, Nick Barlow of North Vernon, Marley Vawter of Chicago, Illinois, Alex Barlow of North Vernon, Joe Barlow of North Vernon, Eli Vawter of North Vernon, Mackenzie Deppe of Indianapolis, David and Solomon Shaw of Vernon; two great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hanson and Mary Elizabeth McClusky; husband, Bob Shaw; daughter in law, Karen Shaw; granddaughter, Rachel Shaw; great grandchild, Caitlin Barlow.
