David Hayes Obituary

David Wallace Hayes, 76, of Seymour formerly of Hardinsburg, KY, passed away at 11:33 p.m. on Monday, February 26, 2024, at Autumn Trace in Seymour.

A service will be held at a later date in Kentucky. Cremation was chosen. Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service are entrusted with the arrangements.

Born on October 7, 1947, in Glasgow, KY, David was the loving son of David Lee (D.L.) and Ruth (Page) Hayes.

David had worked for 23 years as the editor for The Hearld News in Hardinsburg, KY. He was a retired teacher in the Breckinridge County School District having complied 27 years of service all at Hardinsburg Elementary.

An avid photographer and railfan, he spent many days riding trains all over North America, South America, and Europe. He was a member of the Louisville and Owensboro chapters of the National Railway Historical Society and had received his 25 years membership pin in 2001. He was a member of the Breckinridge County Historical Society. David oversaw both the Hardinsburg Christmas Parade and Fair Day Parade for several years and worked as a volunteer on behalf of the county as tourism director. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Left to cherish David’s memory is sister, Brenda Lou Guffey of Columbus; nieces, Dana (Paul) Ramage of Bloomington, and Denise (Jim) Hoffman of Seymour; great nieces, Paige (Garrett) Jackson, Whitney Axsom, and Katherine Ramage; great great niece, Harper; great great nephew Rhett.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David Lee and Ruth Hayes; brother in law, Bill Guffey; niece, Leslie Ann Guffey.

Memorials can be made through the funeral home to Breckinridge County Historical Society.
