December 30, 1932 - January 29, 2013
William Francis Ertel, Sr., 80, of North Vernon, passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.
Born December 30, 1932, in North Vernon, Mr. Ertel was the son of the late William and Frances Reichle Ertel. He married Barbara Barnthouse on August 20, 1955. She survives.
William served in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955. He retired from Cosco, where he was employed as a transportation manager. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, K of C #1631 and the men's choir at St. Mary's. He had served on the Parish Council and had previously coached basketball at St. Mary's. He enjoyed music and woodworking, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren's activities.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of North Vernon; a daughter, Helen (Jeff) Brunner of North Vernon; three sons, Bill (Sharlot) Ertel, Jr., Joe (Kathy) Ertel and Ed (Paula) Ertel, all of North Vernon; two sisters, Helen Rogers and Ruth Evelyn Helm, both of North Vernon; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond Ertel; and four sisters, Hilda Ertel, Margaret Ertel, Norma Carnes and Virginia Clark.
Funeral Information
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rev. Jonathan Meyer will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service, with a Rosary service at 3:30 p.m. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Vincent DePaul Building Fund, St. Mary's School or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
