Virgil Raymond Phelps

November 13, 1918 - June 14, 2009

Virgil Raymond Phelps, 90, of Butlerville, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 8:55 PM at the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Born in Jennings County on November 13, 1918. Virgil was the son of the late Frank L and Hattie Anna (Raymond) Phelps. He married Edith "Jo" Leeds November 14, 1952.
He graduated from Butlerville High School in 1936 and was a member of the Butlerville Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army Air Corps. from 1942-1945 where he worked as an airplane mechanic and served in World War II. He was a member of the Butlerville Masonic Lodge #219. Virgil enjoyed being a self-employed farmer.
Virgil is survived by his wife, sons, John W. Phelps of Arkansas, James R. Phelps of Butlerville and a daughter Rhonda K. Bass of Alabama, grandchildren, Samantha Phelps, Joshua Bass, Daniel Young and Nathaniel Young, and two great-grandchildren, Patryk Ian Young and Keagen Roy Young.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Terry Lee Phelps, one brother, Willard Phelps and a sister Leota Bartels.

Funeral Information

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 18, at 10:00 AM at Sawyer~Pickett Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Rev. Robert Loretz officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM till 8:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday at 9:00 AM until the time of the service. A Masonic service will be held at 8:00 PM at the funeral home Wednesday. A military burial will be at the Vernon Cemetery.
