Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tommy Leroy Franks, who left us at the age of 83, on April 25, 2026. Born on March 21, 1943, in Muncie, Indiana, Tommy was a proud North Vernon resident who brought joy and laughter to all those around him. He grew up in a loving family and is survived by his daughter Melissa (Dale) Ramey, son Floyd Franks, and several siblings, including sisters Virginia Clark, Peggy Hudson, and Nancy Perry, as well as brothers Raymond and Larry Franks. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Tom worked as a mechanic at Cummins, Inc., where he utilized his knack for working on anything with a motor. His passion for anything that went vroom extended to his hobbies, which included working on anything with an engine, and racing. He also loved fishing, playing euchre and going to the casino. A man of many talents and a great sense of humor, Tom had a penchant for pranks that kept everyone on their toes and filled his life-and the lives of those around him-with laughter.

Tom served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career; he was actively involved in his community as the Vernon Town Marshal for over a decade. A proud member of Masonic Lodge #59 in Butlerville, the Rolling Hills Shrine Club, VFW Post 2021, and the North Vernon Moose Lodge, Tom made deep connections with those around him.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Tom's life at the Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service. There will be a public visitation on Friday, May 1, 2026, starting at 10:00 am, followed by a Masonic Service at 1:00 pm and a Funeral Service at 1:30 pm. Rev. Debbie Black will officiate. He will then be laid to rest with military rites at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, IN.

Tom will be missed dearly, but his vibrant spirit, love of life, and infectious laughter will forever be remembered. Please come share your memories and honor this wonderful man's life.

Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Franks; parents, Andrew and Thelma Eppard Franks; sister, Linda Fletcher; brothers, Robert Franks, Richard Franks, William Franks, Jerry Franks, Delmar Franks, Jack Franks, and Jim Franks.

Memorials may be made in Tom's memory to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
