Mr. Thomas W. Welch

August 06, 1922 - May 30, 2012

Thomas W. Welch, 89, of North Vernon, passed away on May 30, 2012, at Jennings Health Care Center in North Vernon.

Born August 6, 1922, in Jennings County, Thomas was the son of William J. and Lena Gentner Welch, who preceded him in death. He married Laura Marie Vanosdol Roberts on November 19, 1955. She survives.

Mr. Welch served in the United States Army. He retired from Scott County Stone, and previously worked as superintendent for Seymour Sub District. He farmed all of his life in Bigger Township. He was a member of Graham Baptist Church for over 50 years, where he served as deacon for many years, Sunday school superintendent and state officer. He was a member of both the Masonic Lodge #219 and Eastern Star for over 50 years. He also was a member of Farm Bureau, served as a Bigger Township trustee, served two terms as county commissioner, served as State County Commissioner president, Democrat County chairman, on the Jennings County County Council, and on the Community Building board for 12 years. He started a lunch program at San Jacinto School.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Welch is survived by 2 sons, Charles (Kathy) Welch of Butlerville and Gary Welch of North Vernon; a granddaughter, Kaitlin Welch; and a sister, Ida Huffman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Cora Perkins, Georgia Bruce and Laura Speer.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, June 4, 2012, 11:00 AM at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service in North Vernon, with the Rev. Tom Mattingly officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Sunday, June 3, 2012, and from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 PM on Sunday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery.
