Russell W. Eakins, 85, of North Vernon, passed away at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.

Graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Vernon Cemetery. Rev. Joe Wyatt will officiate.

Born June 25, 1930, in Butlerville, Russell was the son of Russell B. and Lola (Hendricks) Eakins. A 1948 graduate of Butlerville High School, he married Rhoda Hudson on May 7, 1949. She survives.

Russell worked as a tooling engineer for 28 years at IT&T in North Vernon, and for eleven years at Arvin Industries. He was a member of Butlerville Masonic Lodge #219 and Rolling Hills Shrine Club, and he enjoyed building model steam boats and planes.

Survivors include his wife, Rhoda Eakins of North Vernon; three sons, Mark Eakins of Jeffersonville, Wayne (Kim) Eakins of Bloomington, and Christopher Eakins of Nashville, Indiana; a sister, Lorene Hodell of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, Julie and Evan Eakins and Hillary (John) Frye; and four great-grandchildren, Samuel Thomas Frye, Gunnar and Zoe Ortlibe, and Paisley Eakins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Louise Day.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of Jennings County or Shrine Hospital.
