Robert A. Dorsett II, 85, of North Vernon, passed away Monday, October 13, 2008 at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born October 21, 1922 in Seymour, IN, he was the son of Robert A. and Helen Evelyn Gerkin Dorsett, they preceded him in death. He married Eleanor A. McCauley on November 12, 1946 in North Vernon, she survives.
Mr. Dorsett was a 1940 graduate of North Vernon High School. He went on to work as a bridge painter with the Pennsylvania Railroad, Ewing Foundry in Indianapolis, and Civilian Conservation Corp. He then served in Europe during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Distinguished Unit Badge, and other various other medals.
After his service time, Mr. Dorsett graduated from Purdue University in 1953. Then in 1969 he received his second bachelor's degree from Indiana University and later received a Masters Degree also from Indiana University in 1972. Mr. Dorsett was a school teacher from January 1953 to May of 1987. Some of his hobbies included Lapidary, silver smith, gun smith, bee keeper, wine maker. He was a member of the Brown County Artist Guild and the Lawrence Country Rock Club. Mr. Dorsett was a Soil Conservationist and a farmer in Jennings County. During his teaching years, he taught over 900 Children.
Mr. Dorsett is survived by his wife, Eleanor, three daughters: Nora Jane Campbell and Mary Helen Kilgore, of North Vernon, and Joanna Dorsett of Charlestown, SC, two sons, Robert A Dorsett III and William C. Dorsett, both of North Vernon, two sisters, Helen Louise Plumer of Cortland, IN and Betty Jo Palmer of Lawrenceburg, IN, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Dorsett was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Lou Bowen.
Funeral Information
A funeral mass is planned for 11 AM, Thursday, October 16, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. A gathering of family and friends will be from 12 to 2 PM at the St. Mary's Parish Center.
