Mr. Robert W. Curry

March 16, 1919 - December 01, 2011

Robert W. Curry Sr., 92 of North Vernon passed away at 9:17 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour with his family by his side.
Born March 6, 1919 in Rexville, Indiana, Mr. Curry was the son of the late Clyde B. and Mabel Armstrong Curry. He graduated from Versailles High School in 1938 where he was a star basketball player for the Versailles Frenchies. At the age of 22 Robert enlisted in the United States Army on January 12, 1942. He married Genevieve McNeelan, on August 18, 1942 at the Little Church Around The Corner in New York City, New York. He served his country in World War II as part of the 88th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron with whom he was shipped to England and later advanced through the Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Ardennes. His unit was briefly attached to the Third Army. Bob had the honor of being chosen as a special guard for General Patton who visited their unit. Sgt. Curry received the Purple Heart for wounds received while serving in Germany. He also received EAME Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Bob was discharged on November 18, 1945.
Mr. Curry retired from Prudential Insurance where he had been an agent for 33 years. He was mayor of the city of North Vernon from 1980 until 1988. He was a member of the North Vernon United Methodist church where he had been a member of the Administrative Board. Bob had served his community as a member of the Jennings County Health Board, the Jennings County Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and the Aging & Community Service Board. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Shrine Club, North Vernon Masonic Lodge #59, Matt Hester Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2021 and was a life member of the American Legion. Bob enjoyed all sports especially Indiana University and Purdue Basketball and Colts Football, playing golf, serving his community, and most of all, spending time with his family.
Mr. Curry is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Genevieve of North Vernon, a son, Robert Curry Jr. and his wife Sherry of North Vernon, a daughter, Margie Willman and her husband Rodney of Seymour, a sister, Jo Westmeyer of Versailles, three grandchildren, Mark Curry, Ryan Curry, and Jenny Curry, and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Halstead Curry and three sisters, Clarabelle Vestal, Dorothy Cromer, and Isabelle Heidorn.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7th at the First United Methodist Church in North Vernon with Reverends Marvin Sweet and Joe Wyatt officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. Masonic Funeral Rites will be given at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery with Military honors provided by the United States Army and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2021.
