Richard Gene Heston, 65, of North Vernon passed away late Monday evening, August 4, 2008 at home after a brief battle with cancer.
Richard was born May 30, 1943 to Vern A. and LaVonne (Mullen) Heston in Muncie. He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1961 and then went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1965.
Mr. Heston had been employed with GE/RCA for 37 years in Indianapolis. He was a member of the IBEW, Local 1048, Eagles 4097, and AMVETS Post 7. Richard was blessed with a keen sense of humor, a gentle kindness, and devoted loyalty to those around him. His family and friends will forever carry him within their hearts.
Left to cherish his memories is his loving wife Nancy (Ballard) Heston of North Vernon, a son, William R. (Mary) Heston, of Bloomington, a step-son, Vincent (Marilyn) Estes of Deputy, two step-daughters, Lee Ann (Tom) Shouse and Linda (William) Montgomery both of North Vernon, two sisters, Theata Best of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina and Barbara Haley of Palm Harbor, Florida, a brother, James (Connie) Heston of Fort Wayne, a half-brother, Dennis (Susan) Mullen of Jacksonville, Florida, a half-sister, Debra Heston, twelve grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and four nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Janice Heston, a son Ricky Heston, and a step-son, Harry Ballard Jr.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses at the VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, as well as Jennings County Hospice. Special thanks to the VA drivers for transporting to and from the VA Medical Center. A special thanks also to nurse Sandy Gregory for the excellent and compassionate care he received from her.
Funeral Information
A funeral service with Military Honors will be held at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral Home on Friday, August 8, 2008 at 1 PM, with the Rev. Terry Branum officiating. Visitation will be from 11 AM until the time of the service Friday. Cremation and internment is planned for a later date at Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hospice of South Central Indiana.
