Mrs. Opal C Whitaker

Opal C. Whitaker, 84, of North Vernon, passed away at noon on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Jennings Healthcare Center in North Vernon.

Born October 8, 1928 in Gordon, KY, Opal was the daughter of the late Harrison and Minerva Riddle Cornett. Mrs. Whitaker had attended Kingdom Come High School in Kentucky before going to Morehead State University majoring in education. She later attended Indiana University where she obtained her Masters Degree in Education. Her teaching career led her to Indiana in 1953 where she taught until retiring in 1982 from the Jennings County School Corporation, of which 20 years were with Scipio Elementary. Opal married Ira Whitaker in 1947 and he preceded her in death in 1993.

Mrs. Whitaker had been a member of the First Baptist Church in North Vernon and the Delta Theta Tau Sorority.

Opal is survived by a son, Ed K. (Angie) Whitaker of North Vernon; a sister, Ann Stephens of Cumberland, KY and 2 grandchildren, Eric Whitaker of North Vernon and Brittany Whitaker of Greenwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Minerva Cornett her husband Ira Whitaker and a brother, Provy Cornett.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be held on at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service on Monday, July 16, 2012, at 11:00 with Rev. Al Davidson officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 3-6pm and from 10am until the time of the service on Monday. Interment will be at the Dupont Cemetery.
