Opal M. McElroy, 88, of Indianapolis formerly of North Vernon, passed away at 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2024, at the Community North Hospital in Indianapolis.

There will be a graveside service held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024, at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Cremation was chosen. Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service are entrusted with the arrangements.

Born on April 29, 1935, in Jennings County, Opal was the loving daughter of Raymond D. and Grace Margaret (Yeager) Shonk.

Opal graduated in 1953 from Lawrence Central High School. She retired for RCA Opal Radio, which was named after her. She enjoyed traveling, going to casinos, and reading. Most of all, Opal loved spending time with her family and friends.

Left to cherish Opal's memory is daughter, Lyn A. McElroy of Indianapolis; son, Mark E. McElroy of Winchester; grandchildren, Sheila Marie McElroy, Amanda Christine Cox, and Matthew Aaron McElroy; six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Grace Shonk; sisters, Barbara P. Niles, Laura J. Noe, and Alice L. Matlock.

Memorials can be made through the funeral home to the American Diabetes Association or the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Organization.
