Mr. Milford L. Smith

September 26, 1934 - January 21, 2014

Milford Lafayette Smith, 79, of North Vernon, IN, passed away at 6:55 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at Jennings Healthcare Center in North Vernon, IN.

Born September 26, 1934, in Harlan, KY, Milford was the son of the late Olin and Jewel Graybill Smith. He married Janice Fields on September 16, 1961. She survives.

Milford graduated from Harlan High School. He earned a B.S. in business education from Eastern Kentucky University, and a M.S. in education from Indiana University. He retired from Jennings County Schools after 35 years of teaching. He had been a member of Vernon Baptist Church. He had served as superintendent of North Vernon City Park for 18 years. He enjoyed playing pool, golf, wood working, UK basketball and watching his children and grandchildren play sports.

In addition to his wife, Janice, Milford is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Todd) Hearne of North Vernon; two sons, Brad (Traci) Smith of Evansville, IN, and Chad (Annie) Smith of North Vernon; sister, Irene (Glenn) Miller of Carnesville, GA; and five granddaughters, Lucy and Ellie Hearne, and Kelsey, Samantha and Madeline Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mattie Ann Cole; and three brothers, Tommy, Al and Johnny Smith.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service in North Vernon, IN. Rev. Don Morris will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Vernon Baptist Church or Our Hospice of Jennings County.
