Merrill Salyers, a cherished father, grandfather, educator, and veteran, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on September 8, 1934, in Martin, Kentucky, he devoted over four decades of his life to the education of young minds as a teacher at Jennings County Schools, where he was instrumental in developing the Industrial Arts Program at Jennings County High School.

Merrill proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from September 22, 1953, to September 22, 1956, achieving the rank of Sergeant. Following his honorable service, he furthered his education, graduating from Morehead State University with a Bachelor's Degree and subsequently earning a Master's Degree from Indiana University.

Merrill married Joyce Bentley on January 10, 1959. She preceded him in death on January 8, 2014.

A resident of North Vernon, Indiana, Merrill was an active member of several community organizations, including the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Rolling Hills Shrine Club, and Dupont Masonic Lodge where he was a past master. He devoted much of his time to volunteering at the Park Theater Civic Center, serving on the board of North Vernon Senior Housing, and being actively engaged with the Hayden Historical Society. In addition to his professional and community contributions, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, working on various projects, and mowing grass, all of which reflected his hands-on approach to life.

Merrill is survived by his devoted daughter, Melissa (David) Rockelman; sons, Michael (Julie) Salyers and Mitchell Salyers; as well as his beloved grandchildren: Stefan Maupin, Nicholas Maupin, Grace Salyers, Quinn Salyers, Jonah Salyers, Jaynie Salyers, Jobey Salyers, Judah Salyers, and Josee Salyers; great-grandchildren, Jett Maupin, Finn Maupin, and Jace Maupin; close companion and partner, Millie Burgmeier, her son, Pete Burgmeier, and his son Brady who thought of Merrill as grandpa.

A funeral services in honor of Merrill Salyers will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service. Rev. Lenny Thorpe will officiate. Burial with Military Honors provided by V.F.W. Post 2021 and the United States Marine Corps will follow at Hayden Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service and on Monday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be conducted at 6:30 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in Merrill's memory may be made to North Vernon Senior Housing, or the Park Theater Civic Center.

Merrill Salyers will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to education, his contributions to the community, and the profound love he instilled in his family. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.

Merrill was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Salyers; parents, Lyhue and Girdell Dingus Salyers and his beloved daughter-in-law, Jonella Saylers.
