Dr. Max Coryell Joseph

July 21, 1922 - September 23, 2012

Dr. Max Coryell Joseph, 90, of Franklin, formerly of North Vernon, passed away at 4:55 pm on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin.

Born July 21, 1922 in Jennings County, Dr. Joseph was the son of the late Herbert and Irene Coryell Joseph. He married Geraldine Elliott on September 13, 1952. She survives.

Dr. Joseph attended high school in Marion Township, and graduated in 1939. He served in the United States Marine Corps from October 1942 until May 1946. He attended Indianapolis Business College, and later graduated in 1955 from Ohio State University with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine. He practiced as a veterinarian until he retired. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Mason Lodge #59, and became a Master Mason on April 3, 1965. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Lodge #183, charter member of the North Vernon Rotary Club, and life member of Ohio State University Alumni Association. Veterinary memberships include: Life Member of American Veterinary Medical Association, Life Member and Past President in 1974 of Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA), Honorary, Charter Member of American Association of Bovine Practitioners, Member of 9th District of IVMA. He served on the Jennings County Board of Health for more than 30 years. In 1984, he received the President's Award from the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association. He received the Award of Merit from Gamma Sigma Delta in 1985, Certificate of Distinction in 1981 from the Purdue Agricultural Alumni Association, and Distinguished Hoosier Certificate in 1994.

Dr. Joseph is survived by his wife, Geraldine; sisters, Charlotte Short of Indianapolis and Shirley James of Rantoul, IL; nephews, Kevin and Randy Short of Indianapolis, Michael Joseph of Houston, TX, Lee James of VA, and Lindsey James of Newport, RI; nieces, Dawn Bruno of Rantoul, IL and Leslie Short Spencer of Indianapolis.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Joseph was preceded in death by his brother, Royce Joseph, and nephew, Stephen Short.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at First Baptist Church in North Vernon. Rev. Bob Weeks will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Friday at Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin, and from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday at First Baptist Church.
