Maurice A. Grider, 89, of North Vernon passed away at 6:50 P.M. on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at his home.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 12:15 P.M. on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at Vernon Cemetery. Rev. Tim Poer will officiate. Sawyer – Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Born September 21, 1930, in Indianapolis, Maurice was the son of Vurchel and Bertha Ross Grider. He married Edna Cockerham in 1948. She preceded him in death in 1981. He then married Jewel Bryant and she survives.
He served in the United States Army, worked for the B&O Railroad for twenty years and was a timber buyer for fifty -five years. He was a member Grayford Road Church of God, the Jackson Masonic Lodge, and Masonic Lodge #59 in North Vernon. He was also a member of Murat Shrine and Scottish Rite. He was a life member at AmVets Post 7 where he served as commander for six years.
Maurice is survived by his wife Jewell Grider of North Vernon; sons, William (Wilma) Grider, Larry (Josie) Grider, and Joe (Charlene) Grider of North Vernon; stepchildren, Charles Etienne, Lorrie Etienne Campbell, and Wesley Scott Crane of North Vernon; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vurchel Grider; mother, Bertha Lambert; son, Robert Grider; brother, Willard Grider; sister, Virginia E. Merick; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to Our Hospice of Jennings County.
