Mary E. Smith, 84, of North Vernon, passed away at 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at Hickory Creek in Madison.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service. Rev. Dan Corbin will officiate. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the start of the service on Friday, November 8, 2024.

Born on January 22, 1940, in North Vernon, Mary was the loving daughter of the late Fletcher and Bertha Day. She was united in marriage to Delbert Smith in 1978. He preceded her in death on June 28, 1986.

Mary was a homemaker most her life. She enjoyed music especially old country, liked to go dancing, and was quite the fisherman in her spare time. Mary was a OVO Head Start Foster Grandparent for ten years. Most of all, Mary loved and cherished her family and making memories with all of them.

Left to cherish her memory are sons, Timothy Ray Christian of Hayden, and Mark Alan (Marilyn) Christian of Madison; grandchildren, Jeff Christian, Lamanda Hatton, Savannah Mae Walters, Asa Session, Jaman Cartwright, Jansen Cartwright, Matthew Christian, Meisha Grigsby, TJ Higdon, Alan Christian, Theresa Hobbs, and Makayla De Groot; thirty two great grandchildren; brother in law, Donny Shuck; and several nieces, nephews, and their extended family.

In addition to Mary's parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Morton Christian; son, Jeffrey Charles Christian; daughter, Debra Helen Grigsby; daughter in law, Tina Marie Christian; son in law, Edward Lee Grigsby; sisters, Rosanna Mae Low, and Alice Marie Schuck; and brother, John Edward Day.
