Mrs. Mary Jean C. Pettinger

September 16, 1923 - March 12, 2014

Mary Jean C. Pettinger, 90, of North Vernon, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at her residence.

Born September 16, 1923, in Omaha, NE, Mary Jean was the daughter of the late Leo and Cecil (Davisson) Herbert. She graduated from Omaha Technical High School and attended University of Nebraska at Omaha. She married William H. Pettinger on June 15, 1946. He preceded her in death on July 8, 2004.

Mary Jean had previously been employed as an executive secretary for the Red Cross. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading, traveling, sewing, painting and gardening. She was a sponsor of Sierra Club and Friends of the Library.

Survivors include a son, Bob (Roita) Pettinger of North Vernon; grandchildren, Annette (Aaron) Jobe of Columbus, and Craig (Rebecca) Pettinger of North Vernon; and great grandchildren, Alex Jobe, Luke and Kylie Pettinger.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Robert Herbert.

Funeral Information

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rev. Jerry Byrd will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. Rosary service will be at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Project Share, or the Jennings County Library.
