Mrs. Martha L. Smith

February 22, 1924 - August 31, 2010

Martha L. Smith, 86 of North Vernon passed away at 4:44 a.m. on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Jennings Healthcare Center in North Vernon.

Born on February 22, 1924 in Jennings County, Martha was the daughter of the late Carl Alonzo and Lena E. Lewellen Coryell. She graduated from Vernon High School and went on to marry Herbert Matthews in 1941 and he preceded her in death on November 22, 1963. She later married Harold Smith and he also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Smith had been a member of the First Apostolic Church and Senior Citizens Center both here in North Vernon. She had been a foster grandparent and enjoyed playing bingo and crocheting..

She is survived by a son, Roy Matthews of North Vernon; a daughter, Susan K. Matthews Adams of Marietta, OH; two brothers, James Coryell of Michigan and Herbert Earl Coryell of Georgia; two sisters, Geneva May Curtis of Michigan and Eileen Dieson of Okeechobee, FL; 10 grandchildren;18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 4 step grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents, a great-grand daughter, LaDawn Vance; four brothers, Elmer, Chesley, Francis and Alva Coryell; a sister, Doris Schafer and two sibling infants.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 3, 2010 at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral Home with Rev. John Willis officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
