Marie was born in North Vernon on January 17, 1929, as one of 5 children born to Alfred and Bertha Hummel. She attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from North Vernon High School in 1948. Marie met Hubert Fry on a blind date while in high school. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church on December 27, 1949. Marie and Hubert were blessed with 9 children, 30 grandchildren, and many more great grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by husband, Hubert; sons, Samuel and George; daughters, Cathy and Ruth; brother, Dr. Robert Hummel; sister, Cecilia Hummel. Marie is survived by children, Bridget (Bill) Moeller, Margaret (Jerry) Tipps, Daniel (Melody) Fry, Barbara (Tom) Pruitt, and Jennifer (Matt) King; sisters, Dorothy Filson and Clara Hummel.
Growing up in Indiana surrounded by good, hardworking people, Marie knew she was born to serve family, God, and community. She was a lifetime parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Raising 9 children was a fulltime job for Marie. She instilled a strong work ethic and love of Jesus in her children. Marie was known for her positive outlook on life and a smile on her face. Even with the passing of her husband and 4 children, Marie remained strong in her faith, love of God, and charitable actions.
As her children grew, left home and married, Marie became very active in St. Mary's parish. She attended daily mass for many years. She served as a Eucharistic Minister, took communion to sick and shut in parishioners, served as a member of the Legion of Mary, the Bereavement Committee, Faith Formation Commission, First Friday Adoration coordinator, coordinator of Jacob's Prayer Line, and Pro-Life activities. Marie was known to be generous to a fault, constantly offering to do and help out with whatever was needed. For her service to St. Mary's parish, Marie was recognized by the Knights of Columbus Indiana State Council who presented her with their 2003-2004 Outstanding Catholic Lay Person Award.
Marie was also known as a skilled knitter who knitted many sweaters and caps for grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as for newborn infants in local hospitals. She was also a skilled card player, especially Skip Bo. Marie won more times than she lost. She was a devoted Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune fan where she enjoyed solving the puzzles or answering questions ahead of the contestants.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Mary's Catholic School in memory of Marie Fry.
