Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Maria Eliza Slagle, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who peacefully left this world on June 8, 2025, at the remarkable age of 99. She was born on December 13, 1925, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Benito and Eliza (Alarid) Rael. Maria lived a life rich in love, warmth, and devotion to her family and community.

Maria dedicated her life to the service of others, both professionally and personally. She enjoyed a long and respected career as a banker at Union Bank & Trust/First Financial Bank, where her integrity and kindness made a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working alongside her. A proud member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, she embraced her faith with a spirit of generosity and warmth, extending her love to the community around her.

Beyond her professional achievements, Maria was a people person and was known by everyone. She had a gift for creating lasting friendships, which she treasured throughout her life. As the official chaperone for the Touch of Class Swing Choir at Jennings County High School, she shared her love for music and her infectious enthusiasm with countless students, helping them to flourish both inside and outside of the classroom.

Maria's talents extended into her personal life as well, where she was celebrated as an excellent seamstress, crafting beautiful pieces including wedding dresses for her daughters. Her dedication to her craft exemplified her generosity and care for those around her. As a devoted guild lady at Ascension St. Vincent Jennings Hospital, she volunteered her time and talents, embodying the spirit of compassion.

Maria is survived by her daughters Yolanda (Gilbert) Capes and Loyola Slagle; brother Mike (Marlene) Rael of Santa Fe; grandchildren Tony (Becky) Capes, Adam (Paige) Capes, Matthew (Amanda) Capes, and Nicholas (Brittany) Dorsett; great-grandchildren Natalie, Ryann, Silas, Taite, Ava, Audrey, and Roland; and many nieces and nephews. Each of them carries forward her legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering support.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025, at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
