Margaret Mae Gaines, 91, of Madison, passed away Monday, May 26, 2014 at Hickory Creek Healthcare Center of Madison.
Born May 23, 1923 in Lexington, IN, Margaret was the daughter of Ransome and Gladys Bessie (Rogers) Wainscott. She married Ralph B. Gaines on February 17, 1939. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1993.
Before her retirement in 1980, Margaret worked as a cook at St. Mary's and Michael's Schools in Madison, and as a nurse's aide in Greensburg and Columbus hospitals. She was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church. She enjoyed politics, making dolls, quilting, sewing, and reading books. She was a member of the Ladies Aide at New Bethel United Methodist Church, and was a Girl Scout leader. She also attended St. Michael's Church in Madison.
Margaret is survived by two sons, Ralph R. Gaines of North Vernon and Mike Gaines of Fishers; five daughters, Joyce Seal of Hope, Barbara Geisler of Madison, Ruth Ann Shirey of Indianapolis, Penny Henry of Madison, and Marie Gilpin of North Vernon; sister, Edna Lucille Cook of New Harmony, UT; twenty-two grandchildren; forty-six great-grandchildren; and thirty-three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret was preceded in death by five sisters, Gladys Larraine Leeds, Daisy Harold, Ida Lucille Rousch, Mary Jo Rogers, and Geneva Wainscott; two brothers, Dean and Frankie Wainscott.
Funeral Information
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, May 30, 2014 at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. Rev. Chuck Poston will officiate. Interment will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Madison, IN. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
