Mrs. Mabel Marie Umphrey

Mabel Marie Umphrey, 97, of North Vernon, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour.

Born May 13, 1917, in Jennings County, Mabel was the daughter of the late Charles and Ruby Menaugh Anderson. She graduated North Vernon High School in 1935, where she was the high school's first prom queen. She married Ralph Umphrey on August 18, 1937. He preceded her in death on June 21, 1970.

Mabel had been employed at Shoe Mart and Style Shop in North Vernon. She attended First United Methodist Church. She loved doing needlepoint.

Survivors include one son James Michael (Rebecca) Umphrey of North Vernon; grandson, Craig Michael (Kerry) Umphrey of Terre Haute; great grandchildren, Grant and Allison Umphrey of Terre Haute.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; brother John D. Anderson; sister, Mildred Webb and beloved sister, Nellie Rettig.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. Rev. Kendall Wildey will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.
