Mr. Leo R. Hillen

October 31, 1925 - June 24, 2014

Leo R. Hillen, 88, of North Vernon, passed away at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at his residence.

Born October 31, 1925, Leo was the son of the late Nicholas and Victoria Dlugos Hillen. On February 25, 1949, he married Margaret Kuntz. She preceded him in death on July 15, 2013.

Leo served in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired from Cummins, Inc., where he had worked for 39 years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus #1631. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Colts, Pacers and Reds, and he enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include four sons, Dana (Mary) Hillen of Crossville, AL, Anthony (Linda) Hillen of Columbus, John (Kathy) Hillen of North Vernon, and Charles Hillen of New Hampshire; five daughters, Tami (Tim) Brown and Frances (Robbie) Leonard, both of North Vernon, Mary (James) Vincent and Margaret (Dan) Fouts, both of Columbus, and Ann (John) Compton of Franklin; two sisters, Madonna Hillen and Ann Matern, both of North Vernon; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Leo was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jane Pollard and Catherine Hoffman, and brother, Frank Hillen.

Funeral Information

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rev. Jerry Byrd will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2014, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service, with a rosary service at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.
