Lena Mae Murrell, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on January 4, 1933, in Booneville, Kentucky, Lena lived a full and vibrant life, touching the hearts of all who knew her. She married Ralph Murrell on February 18, 1949. He preceded her in death on July 15, 2001.
Lena dedicated herself to her family as a devoted homemaker, creating a warm, loving environment filled with laughter and cherished memories.
Lena was well known to the hobo community, commonly referred to as "Mzz Lena". She would prepare sanwiches, fruit, and a clean mason jar of cold milk or water. for them. Hobo, Poopy Jenkins, would tell his friends to stop by the Murrell's on West O&M Ave. She never turned away a hungry hobo.
She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Frank) King, and Pam (Ronnie) Chrisman of North Vernon; son, Billy Wayne (Leesa) Murrell of Lamb, daughter-in-law of Barbara Murrell of Boonville, KY, and Nicci Murrell of North Vernon; sister Della Jean Angel of Boonville, KY; grandchildren, Chastidy Murrell, Brentt King, Christina Manning, Bryan Murrell, Eli (Marikia) Murrell, Kelsey (Dylan) Wyne, Shawn (Whitney) Israel, and Nick (Whitney) Carroll; great-grandchildren, Morgan Duchi, Josh Vessell, Kris Harvey, Kaelyn Rowe, Dalton and Justin Brogdon, Christin Brogdon Ison, Cayleigh and Cynzleigh Manning, and Cali Murrell; great-great grandchildren, Pippa Rowe, Jax Harvey, Cole and Wyatt Ison, and August Coomer; her beloved staff at Majestic Care of North Vernon.
Lena was a woman of varied interests, enjoying the simple pleasures in life. She loved spending time with family, babysitting little ones in her home, going to yard sales, and collecting Avon figurines. Her artistic spirit shone through her embroidery, and she delighted in nurturing her flowers, though they often faced challenges with Ralph mowing them over. A devoted fan of soap operas, she looked forward to her daily episodes of "The Young and the Restless," "The Bold and The Beautiful," "Guiding Light," and "As the World Turns." She also cherished attending Little Nashville concerts, everything Elvis Presley, and let's not forget her love of Mt. Dew!
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 PM, at the Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service. Rev. Dan Corbin will officiate. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.
Lena will be greatly missed but fondly remembered for her kindness, warmth, and the deep love she shared with her family and friends. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
