Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Laura Ruth Hammersley, lovingly known as Ruth, who left us on April 3, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on February 10, 1931, in Danville, IL, Ruth was a gentle soul whose spirit brought joy to all who knew her. She married Lester Hammersley on October 4, 1949. He precede her in death on February 26, 2007. She spent many cherished years in North Vernon, IN, where she formed lasting connections and created beautiful memories. Ruth was a devoted mother to her three children, Shelia Adams, Philip Hammersley, and Brian Hammersley of North Vernon, who will forever hold her close in their hearts. She is also survived by her beloved siblings; brother, Paul (Elaine) Scarlett of Marion, OH, and sister, Rebecca Scarlett of Oakland City, who can attest to her kind hearted nature and infectious laughter. Ruth was preceded in death by: husband, Lester Hammersley; parents, Rev. Donald and Tobitha Scarlett; brothers, Rev. Donald Scarlett Jr., Robert Scarlett, Ronald Scarlett, John Scarlett, and James Scarlett; sisters, Doris Woolsey, and Deloris Camp. An incredible cook, Ruth was famous for her delicious pies, which became a highlight of every family gathering. Her love for cooking was matched only by her fondness for flowers, which adorned her home and brought joy to her life. Ruth was also a proud cat mom to her special feline companion, Ringo, who provided her with endless affection and companionship. Ruth dedicated 26 years of her life to serving the community as a clerk at Kroger in North Vernon, making countless friends along the way until the store closed. Her warm smile and caring demeanor left a lasting impression on all her coworkers and customers. A funeral service will be conducted in Ruth's honor at 1:00 pm on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service. Rev. Steve Barrett will officiate. Visitation will be held prior to the start of the service on Thursday beginning at 11:00 am, where family and friends can gather to celebrate her remarkable life and share their cherished memories. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Ruth will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know her. Her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and everyone who enjoyed her warmth and kindness. Rest in peace, dear Ruth. Your love will remain with us forever. Memorial Donations can be made through the funeral home to the American Alzheimer's Association or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
