Obituary

Kathy Sue Marsh, born on March 28, 1958, in Chicago, IL, was welcomed into Heaven on January 8, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness. Residing in North Vernon, IN, Kathy dedicated her life to nurturing the minds and hearts of children as a devoted special education teacher with the Jennings County Schools.

Kathy graduated from North Central High School in 1976, obtained her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education & Special Education from Purdue University in 1980, and her Master's Degree in Special Education from IU Bloomington in 1984. She moved to North Vernon in 1980 where she taught for 42 years, retiring in 2022. She married Patrick W. Marsh in Vernon, IN on March 11th, 1995 by the honorable Larry Greathouse.

Growing up, Kathy was a member of Cross and Crown Lutheran Church in Indianapolis and later became a member of First United Methodist Church in North Vernon. A steadfast volunteer throughout her life, Kathy devoted countless hours to attending and serving her church and local community, participating in various committees, Vacation Bible School, and embarking on mission trips. Her faith shone brightly as she served those around her.

Throughout her life, Kathy's spirit flourished in her many hobbies--a list that only grew after retirement. She was a member of ISTA and the Indiana Federation of Business and Professional Women. She found joy in the arts of crafting, gardening, cooking, and baking. Her friends and family treasured the fruits of her labor in the form of her handmade gifts and treats. Kathy also enjoyed reading, playing games and cards, watching sports, exercising, and traveling. Traveling with family on various cruises and to Siesta Key, Florida on Spring Breaks were some of her most cherished memories.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, Patrick W. Marsh; her cherished son, Garrett W. Marsh; and her two sisters, Nancy Upchurch and Laurie Therrien both of Noblesville, IN. Kathy also had five nieces, four nephews, and four great-nieces and nephews, with two more on the way-- each of whom she loved dearly and enjoyed spending time with as she watched her family grow. Kathy's love, support, generosity, and pride for her family were unwavering.

When Kathy was 4 months old, her mother wrote that she "laughs loud and heartily, smiles all of the time" and that held true for the rest of Kathy's life. In this moment of loss, we remember Kathy for the joy she shared, the wisdom she imparted, and the countless lives she touched through her compassion. In these moments of great loss, we find peace in the memories we hold dear.

Kathy was preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn (Deske) Muhlenfeld; her father, Arthur Muhlenfeld; and many other beloved friends and family.
