Mrs. Joyce B. Salyers

Joyce B. Salyers, 75, of North Vernon passed away at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis on Wednesday, January 8, 2014.

Born January 1, 1939, in Fleming - Neon, KY, Joyce was the daughter of Floyd and Pearl Collier Bentley. She married Merrill Salyers January 10, 1959.

She earned her BA degree from Morehead State College, and then graduated from Indiana University with her MS and EDS degrees. She began her career as a Home Economics teacher at North Vernon High School. She later advanced to being a guidance counselor, director of guidance, and senior guidance counselor at Jennings County High School. Upon retirement Joyce was the assistant principal at Jennings County High School.

She was a member of the Wednesday Research Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Rolling Hills Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Association, and the National Education Foundation. She was elected to the Jennings County School Board where she had served as president. After retiring she was hired as the interim director of guidance at Madison High School for a period of time. She loved her dog, Bud, enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, and especially loved her new home.

Mrs. Salyers is survived by her husband, Merrill Salyers of North Vernon; one daughter, Melissa Maupin of Sussex, WI; sons, Michael Salyers of Batavia, IL, and Mitchell Salyers of Greenwood; one sister, Lois Bentley of Winchester, KY; grandchildren, Stefan and Nicholas Maupin, Grace, Quinn, Jonah, Jaynie, Jobey, Judah, and Josee Salyers.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. Rev. Marvin Sweet will officiate. Interment will be in Hayden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, and prior to the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.
