John "Jack" Benet Schuck

August 4, 1947 – June 2, 2026

Loving brother, father, and grandfather, John (Jack) Benet Schuck, 78, passed away on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026.Jack, the eldest of eight children, was born on August 4th, 1947, in Seymour, Indiana, to parents Edgar and Opal (Sullivan) Schuck. Throughout his life, his curiosity and intellect drove all of his pursuits; whatever Jack did, he pursued with passion and commitment. He excelled in his studies at North Vernon High School, graduating at the top of his class in 1965. Jack then attended Indiana Central (now the University of Indianapolis) as a biology major. A star athlete, he held a long-standing record, until recently, for single-game rushing yards. Jack never intended to pursue a career in medicine until a professor encouraged him to apply. He went on to attend the Indiana University School of Medicine and graduated with a degree in 1974. He always attributed his ability to complete his studies to his wife at the time, Kathy, who paused her own education to support their young family.

After graduating, he returned home to serve his community, establishing his medical practice in North Vernon, where he enjoyed a long career as a family doctor. Jack will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and dedication to his community. An extremely committed physician, he cared for multiple generations of families throughout his 42 years in practice. He gave so much and never expected recognition in return, because caring for and serving his patients was always his top priority. After retiring from medicine in 2017, he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, as well as pursuing his hobbies, which included playing cards, fishing, reading mystery detective novels, doing puzzles, watching old movies, and attending his school reunions.

A loving and devoted father, Jack was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved to tell stories of their accomplishments to whoever would listen. He made friends easily and kept them throughout his life. Jack will always be remembered for his giving nature and wonderful sense of humor. He possessed an amazing memory and was an incredible storyteller. He had a great, easy laugh and loved hearing funny stories; one of the biggest rewards when telling a joke was getting a big laugh out of him. He was truly jovial and charming.

Everyone who knew Jack knew how much he loved two things: Indiana University football/basketball, and ballroom dancing. As a proud alumnus, his wardrobe was deeply dedicated to the color red. An unexpected interest later in life, Jack fell in love with ballroom dancing and became an expert. Light on his feet, he loved dancing both for the music (Frank Sinatra was his favorite singer) and the movement, which brought him immense joy. He found a wonderful sense of community in the ballroom dancing world. An avid movie watcher and a sucker for Hallmark movies, only a close few ever saw the occasional tear he shed while watching them. When asked why he loved those movies so much, he simply said, “They always have a happy ending.” Beneath his sometimes stoic exterior beat a warm and sentimental heart.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Opal (Sullivan) Schuck, his brother, Michael, and his sister, Shirley. He is survived by his brothers, Steve Schuck and Charlie Schuck; his sisters, Sherrel Schuck, Janet Moore, and Jeanne Struben; his daughters, Anjanette Jones and Stephani Schuck; his sons, John "JB" Schuck and Jack "Bernie" Schuck; as well as seven grandchildren and many loyal friends and extended family members.

In honor of his final wishes, Jack’s remains will be scattered near his favorite childhood fishing spot, where he spent cherished time with his father. He will always be remembered for the way he prioritized finding joy in life. If you feel moved to do so, you may contribute stories and comments about Jack and the times you shared together in the space provided. In typical Jack style, and according to his wishes, there will be no formal services or pomp and circumstance.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date, and we will notify family and friends at that time. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Jack will be in our hearts forever.
