Mrs. Joan M. Herche

August 20, 1933 - February 28, 2014

Joan M. Herche, 80, of North Vernon passed away at 9:48 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Our Hospice Inpatient Facility in Columbus.

Born August 20, 1933 in Jennings County, Joan was the daughter of the late Henry Jr. and Lorena Bland Schnadinger. Joan married William C. "Bill" Herche on July 2, 1953. He preceded her in death in March of 1985.

Joan had been a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the local Quilters Guild in Columbus, IN. Joan retired from the Union Bank & Trust Company in North Vernon after many years of employment. After Joan's retirement from the bank, she worked at Batar CafAC. until July of 2013. Joan enjoyed sewing, quilting, and cake decorating. Joan faithfully baked for the North Vernon City Police Department every holiday, including her own birthday. In honor of Joan's service to the NVPD officers, they will be serving as Joan's pallbearers.

Joan is survived by three daughters, Cindy K. (Bob Bland) Smith of North Vernon, Paula J. (Steve) Reed of Westport, and Donna J. Ross of North Vernon, a son, Mark W. (Shelly) Herche of North Vernon. Joan is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Nina Shoultz, Chad Reed, Corey Smith, Krea Hill, Derika Franks, Dylan Herche, Kache Ross, Draden Box, Sydney and Blazze Kreis and Alex Lage, twelve great-grandchildren, Mason Smith, Teghan Pittman, Gannon Smith, Kinley Hill, Kloey Roth, Makaili, Cammi, and Sydney Shoultz, Lauren and Lilly Franks, Addelynn Herche and Bentley Byar. Joan is also survived by one brother, Gordon (Barb) Schnadinger of North Vernon, and one sister, Shirley (Gene) Hook of North Vernon.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lorena Schnadinger, her husband, William "Bill" Herche, a sister, Alice May Schnadinger, and a companion of many years, Dale Losey.

Funeral Information

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in North Vernon with Rev. Jonathan Meyer officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 5, 2014 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service with a Rosary Service at 3:30p.m. Interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
