Jerry Lee Harter, 75, of Seymour, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at the VA Medical Center in Indianapolis.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2018, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service in North Vernon. Rev Gary Dryer will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Committal service will take place immediately following at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison.
Born October 23, 1942, in Council Bluffs, IA, Jerry was the son of James Harter and Helen Housman Harter Daniels. His father died in World War II and his mother married Robert Daniels when Jerry was a toddler. Jerry had been a member of the U. S. Army and had served four years in Vietnam and six years in Korea. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ramona Harter, in 1990. He married Carolyn Chamberlain on April 9, 1994. She survives.
He had retired from Jennings County Schools as a custodian at Scipio Elementary and had been employed as a professional painter. He liked working on lawn mowers, tinkering with things and yard sales.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Carolyn Harter of Seymour; six sons, Brandon Harter of Des Moines, IA, Stockton Harter of Brooklyn, IA, Anthony Harter of Grinnell, IA, Troy Wine of VA, Darren Wine of Commiskey and Kevin Wine of Seymour; two brothers, Joe Harter of AZ and Phil Daniels of OK; three sisters, Gloria Sheeler and Nancy Henry of Altoona, IA and Joyce Ann Harter of Des Moines, IA; twenty grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Harter and Helen and Robert Daniels; his first wife, Ramona Harter; two brothers, Bob and Larry Daniels; and one grandson, Dustin Harter.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the family to assist with expenses.
