Janis S. Boyd, aged 76, of North Vernon, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service, followed by a burial at Otter Creek Cemetery at a later date. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, April 29, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. John, Derek, and Kathy Hillen will officiate.

Janis was born on February 28, 1948, in Seymour, Indiana, to Merlin and Betty (Whitcomb) Boyd. She dedicated 40 years to teaching 5th grade at Scipio Elementary School, leaving a legacy of inspiration and joy. Janis authored a heartfelt book about her teaching experiences, titled "You Even Make My Dog Smile."

A devoted member of the Teacher's Union and the Retired Teachers Association, Janis also served in the Jennings County Treasurer's Office. In her retirement, she remained active, volunteering at the Park Theater and Mercy Rescue, and nurturing her passion for animals by raising Monarch butterflies.

Janis will be deeply missed by her lifetime partner, Donald Schuck; her son, Bryan Boyd of Indianapolis; her brother, Dennis Boyd of Butlerville; and nieces, Rachael Boyd Hodnett, Jenna Boyd Allen, and Jessica Boyd Hayes; along with her great-nieces, Hanna and Danielle Hodnett, Wren Hayes. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Tom and Michael Boyd; as well as her nephew, Mason Boyd.

Memorial donations can be made to Mercy Rescue or Our Hospice of Jennings County through the funeral home.
