Obituary

Janet "Jan" C. Arnett passed away peacefully at Majestic Care in North Vernon, Indiana on a beautiful sunny morning on July 6, 2026. Jan was the daughter of the late Lawrence A. Paight and Sylvia Paight Poor. She was brought earth side on February 4, 1947.  

She graduated from North Vernon High School in 1959. 

 Jan's love story started with her long-term husband in 1968 to Donald "Don" Arnett. When he returned from Vietnam one night at the skating rink in town, Don and Jan met through mutual friends and started dating one year later they were married on September 27, of 1969. Where they celebrated fifty-six years last year. Jan went to cosmetology school in Madison, Indiana.  

 Don and Jan built their home in 1972. Together they enjoyed traveling and camping. They traveled to various states, including Connecticut to see her aunt Florence frequently as well as Florida, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Jan and Don had their first and only child, Darren Arnett, on September 13, 1976. He was her life and she adored him. She loved being with him and doing things together.  

 Jan enjoyed painting, ceramics, crafting, and quilting. She also enjoyed playing cards, cooking, home-cooked meals, and desserts. She was well known for her coleslaw, potato salad, and chocolate chip cookies. Jan and her mother did hair for an amount of time together. She also was a caregiver to her mother before she passed away in 1991. Her favorite color was pink. Her favorite flowers were peonies. She was a very giving loving person to those close to her.  

 A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Vernon Cemetery. Rev. Scott Rosen will officiate. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff at Majestic Care and Our hospice of South Central Indiana for caring for Jan as well.  

 Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service has been entrusted with the arrangements. 

 Jan is survived by her husband, Donald Arnett of North Vernon; son, Darren (Melissa) Arnett of North Vernon; step-granddaughter, Phoenix DeMatteo; step-grandsons, Kameron and Aiden Roberts; nephews, Duane (Tonya) Ralston, Brian (Jude) Ralston, and Jason Ralston; great-nephew, Blake Ralston; great-niece, Emy Ralston. 

 Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Sylvia Paight; brother, Allen Paight; and step-brother, Bill Johnson.
