Mr. James A. Brooks

James A. Brooks, 65, of North Vernon passed away at 1:45 PM Friday, May 16, 2014 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

James was born January 8, 1949 in Indianapolis. He was raised by his adoptive parents, Merle & Perle Brooks. He married Carolyn Matthews May 5, 1973.

He graduated from North Vernon High School in 1967. He served in the United States Army from 1969 - 1971 where he served in Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the US Postal Service where he was a mail carrier for thirty years. He was a big NASCAR fan. His favorite drivers were Dale Earnhardt, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He also liked woodworking, and photography.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn Brooks of North Vernon; two daughters, Kimberly and Melissa Smith of North Vernon; brother, John Brooks of Pleasant Gardens, NC; half - brother, Malcomb Brooks of Mississippi; an aunt, Marlene Hudson of Jonesville, NC; grandchildren, Bryce Downs of North Vernon, and Ella and Noah Smith of Franklin.

He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, and an uncle, Malcomb Brooks.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. Rev. Al Davisson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday and from 12:00 PM until the time of the service Tuesday. Interment will be in Vernon Cemetery.
