Ida Jean Shepherd, 78, of North Vernon, passed away at 9:46 A.M. on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, February 7, 2020, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service.  Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service.   Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.

Born May 22, 1941, in Bedford, KY, Ida Jean was the daughter of Carl and Lillie Johnson Payton. She married Jerry Lee Shepherd on December 28, 1958. He preceded her in death on December 1, 2017.

She retired from Muscatatuck State Developmental Center after thirty years of working. She was a member of Eastern Star and loved playing bingo.

She is survived by a son, Jerry (Marie) Shepherd, Jr. of North Vernon; one daughter, Teresa Shepherd of Crothersville; one brother; Carl Payton of North Vernon; six grandchildren, Nathan, Hannah, Mike and Tonya Shepherd, Matt Browning and Missi Clouse; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one son, Gary Allen Shepherd; sister, Edna Payton; and one great-grandchild, Faith Browning.
