Helen Irene Barringer

Helen Irene (Young) Smith Barringer, 101, died Friday, June 27, 2008 at Jennings Health Care Center.

Born in Jennings County on February 3, 1907 to the late William Royce and Miranda (Day) Young, she was a life long resident of Jennings County. Helen was married to Basil Smith who preceded her in death in December of 1966. Helen later married Henry Barringer who preceded her in death in 1985.

Helen was a woman of many talents and especially enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She enjoyed her flowers, collecting dishes and dolls and played the piano by ear. She will be remembered as a wonderful grandmother. When she was a child she played for the Brewersville Church. She worked at the "Shirt Factory" later known as Regal Rugs, in her early years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a step-daughter, Zella Mae (Kenneth) Nichter of Anderson, a grandson, Rick (Kim) Smith of North Vernon, two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Tanner Smith of North Vernon, and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a son, Robert (Ellen) Smith, a step son Robert Barringer, sister, Mary Young, and six brothers, Fred, Leonard, George, John, Graham, and Chester Young.

Funeral Information

The funeral service will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 1, 2007 at Sawyer~Pickett Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Mayes officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM on Monday, June 30, 2008 and from 9:30 AM until the time of the service on Tuesday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery.
