Obituary

Harold N. "Soup" Campbell, 72, of North Vernon passed away on Monday, September 16, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Bethel Baptist Church. Rev. Ricky Persons will officiate. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2019, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral Home. A Masonic service will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday evening.

Born December 17, 1946, in Owsley, Kentucky, Harold was the son of the late Hubert and Nora (Caywood) Campbell. He was united in marriage to Joanne Ertel on May 5, 1972, she survives.

Harold graduated high school and went on to serve in the Army from December 1966 to December 1969 in the Vietnam War. He was a faithful member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Harold was a member of the Rotary and Lyons Clubs, VFW Post 2021, Masonic Lodge #59, and the Democrat Party. Harold was the Sherriff of Jennings County from 1974 to 1978 and the Mayor of North Vernon from 2008 to 2016. He also served on the City Council for 8 years. He currently was a member of the Utility Board and had served on the St. Vincent Jennings County Hospital Board. Harold owned and operated Campbell's Petroleum from 1989 to 2001 and had owned Marathon Station for a few years. He also drove a school bus for many years. Harold enjoyed playing golf and coaching baseball and football for several years. He helped orchestrate the first building for the Jennings County Schools weight room.

In addition to his wife, Joanne Campbell of North Vernon, Harold will be deeply missed and survived by sons, Travis (Kristin) Campbell of North Vernon and Troy (Leslie) Campbell of Fishers; daughter, Jodi (Dan) Hill of Boston, MA; brother, Dennis (Paula) Campbell of Fishers; grandchildren, Sydney Campbell, Cyrus Campbell, Norah Campbell, Hugh Campbell, Lance Campbell, and Lane Rose Campbell.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ernie Campbell; sisters Norma Campbell and Patricia Foster.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to VFW Post 2021, Bethel Baptist Church, or Donor's Choice of charity.
