Gerald "Jerry" Vernon Smith, 82, of North Vernon, passed away Thursday morning at his residence.
Born October 11, 1926 in Louisa County, VA, he was the son of James and Lura Hensley Smith, they preceded him in death. He married Jacqueline Valiquette in September 1949, she preceded him in death on October 19, 1993.
Mr. Smith was a Veteran of the United States Navy, where he served from June 1944 to October 1947. He worked at the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center for 10 years, and was also employed by Cliffty Too & Engineering, where he worked as a tool & die maker. Mr. Smith was a member of the North Vernon Moose, Eagles and Amvets, and a life member of the North Vernon VFW Post 2021. He enjoyed music and golf.
Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, James (Janice) Smith of Columbus and John (Julie) Smith of North Vernon, two daughters, Jean (Mark) Booher and Joyce (Gary) Yeager both of North Vernon, thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jacqueline, a daughter, Janet Gosman, one grandchild, Josiah Yeager, two sisters, Estel Smith Phillips and Vivian Holokin, and one brother, Bill Smith.
Funeral Information
Funeral services will be 11 AM, Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Sawyer~Pickett Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Weeks officiating. Military graveside services will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
Donations Information
Memorials may be made to the Jennings County Community Foundation Josiah Yeager Scholarship Fund or Hospice of Jennings County.
