George B. Swisher, 80, of Scipio, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012, at his residence. He had been in failing health for several months.
George was born November 17, 1931 in North Vernon, to B. R. "Barney" and Elizabeth Zebell Swisher. He married Eileen Byford Swisher on June 25, 1955, at the Scipio Presbyterian Church.
George attended school in North Vernon. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1950, serving 4 years in the Korean Conflict aboard the destroyer USS Hollister. He was a 50 year member of North Vernon Masonic Lodge #59, Murat Shrine of Indianapolis, and Rolling Hills Shrine of North Vernon. George was active in the transportation of area children to Shrine Hospitals, making over 200 trips.
George retired in 1993, after 32 years at Reliance Electric in Columbus. He was of Christian faith and a member of Tin Can Sailors. George and Eileen enjoyed traveling all over the U. S. to attend reunions each year of Navy buddies.
George is survived by his wife, Eileen; sons Wesley (Betty) of Granger, IN, Jeffrey of Indianapolis, Gordon (Joy) of Greenwood, IN; grandchildren, Andrew and Ellen Swisher of Granger, IN, Ronnie Ruth and Tiffany Swisher of Indianapolis; one great-granddaughter of Indianapolis; brother Robin (Ann) Swisher of Seymour, IN; sister, Marijane Weaver of Enterprise, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Virginia Thut.
Funeral Information
A funeral service will be held at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service on Monday, January 23, 2012, at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 PM on Sunday, January 22, 2012, with a Masonic Service at 7:30 PM. Burial will be at Scipio Cemetery with Military Rites.
Donations Information
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hospice of Jennings County, Rolling Hills Shrine Transportation Fund, or Scipio Presbyterian Church.
