IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Emellou
Day
July 29, 1934 – August 13, 2024
Emellou (Ison) Day, 90, of North Vernon, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at home surrounded by her loved ones.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at the Vernon Baptist Church Family Center. Rev. Don Morris will officiate. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service at the Family Center as well. Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service are entrusted with the arrangements.
Emellou was born in Letcher County, KY on July 29, 1934. She was the loving daughter of Henry and Osa (Frazier) Ison. She was raised in Kingdom Come, KY with three brothers and two sisters.
Emellou was a devoted mother and "Granny" who greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and loved ones. She always had a big smile and warm hug for everyone. She was the gentlest soul, but she was quick to call you out if you were doing something you shouldn't be doing. In her deeply rooted southern hospitality way, when you visited her, she would always ask you if you had eaten anything recently, then insist that you eat something whether you were hungry or not. She was known for her perfectly fried chicken and (always requested) chicken and dumplings. Her feisty spirit and treasured kindness would always light up a room. She was loved beyond measure and she loved her family just as much. She especially loved watching the grandkids play and hearing them laugh. She herself had a bubbly laugh that could melt your heart.
Emellou had retired from the former Muscatatuck State Development Center in Butlerville, IN after 30 years of working as a caregiver. She enjoyed making quilts and other sewing projects.
Raised as a member of Big Cowan Baptist Church, where she was also baptized, her faith remained strong to the very end. She attended Big Creek Old Regular Baptist Church in Jefferson County.
Emellou is survived by her daughter, Tressia Day; sons, David (Jackie) Day, Randy (Monica) Day, and Michael (Dorenda) Day; grandchildren, Kristi Roney, Danielle Underwood, Andrea Dunn, Brandon Kennedy, Dustin Kennedy, Jaime Kennedy, Sophia Day, and Dylan Day; sixteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Katherine Burnside, and Annual Von Halcomb; and sister in law, Shirley Ison.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Osa Ison; brothers, Armond Ison, David Ison, and Donald Ison; sister in laws, Sharon Ison, and Betty Ison; brother in laws, Jim Halcomb, and William Burnside.
Though her passing leaves a deep void in our hearts, we know we will see her again when the Lord calls us home.
"I love you too honey, a whole big bunch!" – Emellou "Granny" Day
