Elbert L. Roane 98, North Vernon, passed away at 10:30 p.m., Saturday May 14, 2016 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus.

He was a machinist, experimental machinist and journeyman tool & die maker for Cummins Engine Company retiring with 32 years of service in 1982.   He was also a farmer from 1952 to 2012.  He was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist and First United Methodist Church in North Vernon.

Bert enjoyed spending time with his family, caring for his farm, crossword puzzles, reading and traveling.  He also volunteered for many projects at church and met with his buddies for coffee at Hardee's and McDonald's.

Calling will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday May 21st at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service in North Vernon, Indiana. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. and burial will follow at Vernon Cemetery.

Mr. Roane was born March 6, 1918, in Jennings County, the son of James Silas and Gertrude Roane.  He married Mary Evelyn (Wilds) Roane on April 25, 1939.

Surviving are sons Ron Roane (Sheila) of North Vernon, Mike Roane (Janet) of Columbus, Steve Roane, (Deborah) of Indianapolis, and a daughter, Lisa Keister (Dan) of Logansport.  Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren, a sister Ruby Dilk of Columbus and a brother Darrel Roane North Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Silas and Gertrude Roane, his wife Mary Evelyn Roane, brothers Charles, Grover (Hap), John and a sister Mae Thomas.

In lieu of flowers the family requests Memorials be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or the First United Methodist Church of North Vernon.
