Obituary

Mr. Edward G. Vogel

April 24, 1923 - February 05, 2013

After losing the love of his life ten years ago, and fighting an illness for the past three, Edward G. Vogel was called home to join his wife, Stella.
Ed, 89, of North Vernon, passed away at 11:42 AM Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at his home of 55 years, surrounded by those who loved him most.

Born April 24, 1923, in Brooklyn, Iowa, Edward was the son of Leo and Marie Claes Vogel. He married Stella Elsner on May 21, 1947. She preceded him in death on February 7, 2003. He served in the US Army during WW II, and later worked as a carpenter and farmer.

Ed never met stranger. He impacted so many lives, especially with his passion of woodworking, and making rosaries from Jobe's tears. He was devoted to God and his family, and could often times be found praying with his rosary in hand. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and St. Joseph's Knights of Columbus. He was able to comfort many crying babies with his big strong hands, funny faces and booming voice. He spent countless hours helping others, working on anything that could be fixed with a hammer. He loved the great outdoors. In recent time, in warm weather, he enjoyed being outside, visiting with friends and sharing his many stories.

Ed and Stella loved to dance, and were known to clear the dance floor as others watched in amazement at their fancy footwork. No one could call a square dance quite like Ed. Ed's zest for life was infectious.

He (Pops) was a shining example for his children and grandchildren, teaching them valuable lessons about the importance of hard work and faith, and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by daughters, Theresa (Jerry) Simmons of Seymour, Pamela (Lee) Cole of Indianapolis, and Patricia (Larry) Cassidy of Shelbyville; sons, Dennis (Linda) and Richard (Felicia) Vogel of North Vernon, and Fred (Sally) Vogel of Seymour; brothers, John, James, and Donald Vogel of Iowa, and Bernard Vogel of Missouri; sisters, Dorothy Schmidt of Iowa, and Anna Meador of Kansas; grandchildren, Brian Simmons, Jennifer Johnson, Debi McLaughlin, Aaron & David Miles, Susan Miles Ellenwood, Daniel, Mark, Colby, Jessica, Katherine, and Xavier Vogel, Suzanne Vogel Dippold, Deanna & Matthew Cole, Rachael & Lauren Cassidy; 13 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Vogel was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, Jacob Vogel; brothers, Anthony, Joe, Paul & Francis Vogel.
