Edgar Aaron Speer, 91, of Columbus, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Four Seasons Health Center.
Born June 28, 1922, in Queensville, IN, Edgar was the son of the late Willard and Edith Bucchanan Speer. He graduated from Butlerville High School in 1940, and later married Lola Marie Perry. She preceded him in death on April 25, 2012.
Edgar served in the Army Aircorp until 1945. He graduated from Franklin College in 1952, and received his Masters and Doctorate of Education from Indiana University. He served as superintendent of schools in North Knox County for ten years, and then in Angola for ten more years. After retiring, he decided to take a job as principal of the middle school in Frankfort, KY for another ten years before finally retiring for the last time. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Columbus, and Masonic Lodge #59 in North Vernon.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandy (Wallace) Cantrell of Columbus; son, David Randall Speer of Carmel; brother, Kenneth Speer of Florida; sister, Bonnie Kelly of North Vernon; two grandchildren, Stephanie (Randy) Johnson and Shannon (Sam) Hickey; four great grandchildren, Joshua David & Jordan Nathaniel Johnson, Caleb James, & Connor William Hickey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Donald and Gerald Ash.
Funeral Information
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Four Seasons Health Center Chapel. Rev. Chris Lantz will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Burial and military graveside rites will be at Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.
