Mr. Earl Hopkins

December 28, 1932 - July 27, 2013

Earl Hopkins, 80, of North Vernon passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013 at his home.

Born December 28, 1932 in Gray, KY, Earl was the son of Shelby and Ellen Durham Hopkins. He married Ruth Colwell September 14, 1976.

Earl graduated from Austin High School in 1950. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1951 until 1954. He worked thirty eight years before he retired in 1993 from Reliance Electric where he worked in the purchasing department. Then he worked another twenty years for Sawyer - Pickett Funeral Home where he assisted with funeral services and other day to day work.
He was a member of the Lord's Chapel, Masonic Lodge #59, a life member of VFW Post 2021, and the American Legion in Seymour. He dearly loved spending time with his family, traveling, watching military movies, and playing cards.

Mr. Hopkins is survived by his wife Ruth Hopkins of North Vernon; two sons, Harold Eugene "Gene" Hopkins of Columbus, and Robert Dale "Bob" Hopkins of Scipio; three step sons; one sister, Shelby Jean Boaz of Columbus; eleven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and seven brothers and sisters, Juanita Lykins, Ben Hopkins, Louis Pearl Hopkins, Vincinta Loomis, Lottie Gosch, Marion Franklin Hopkins, and Lana P. Hopkins.

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Sawyer - Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. Rev. Michael Biggs will officiate. Interment and military graveside rites will be in Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday with a masonic service being conducted at 7:30PM.

Donations Information

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of Jennings County, Jennings County Veterans Transportation Fund, or the Lord's Chapel.
