July 19, 1919 - October 10, 2012

Dorothy Mae "Dottie" Stern, 93, of North Vernon died on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the Jennings Health Care Center.

Born 19 July 1919 in Elihu, Kentucky, Dottie was the youngest of seven children of Pearl and Thomas Lewis. She married Marion W Stern on 14 Jan, 1942 and they moved to North Vernon in 1956.

Dottie worked at Stoner's Department Store in North Vernon for over 20 years, and after her retirement from full-time work, she continued to work part-time at Stoner's Dress Shop in Seymour. A long-time member of St Mary's parish, she was a member of St Vincent de Paul Society, she served on the St Mary's food committee, and she was also a member of the philanthropic sorority of Delta Theta Tau. Dottie loved to knit and crochet and she was an avid (and rabid) University of Kentucky basketball fan.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Anita and Raymond Gauger of Arab, Alabama; four grandchildren Mandy (and Rick) Creech of North Vernon, Paul (and Julie) Gauger of Williams Bay, Wisconsin, Kaylee Ezzo of Indianapolis, Gabe Ezzo of North Vernon; four great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Marina Sigmund of North Vernon, and Emily and Madeline Gauger of Williams Bay, Wisconsin; and nieces Susan McPherson of Tucson, Arizona and Reenie Bontrager of Indianapolis.

Dottie was preceded in death by her husband Marion, daughter Lori (Stern) Ezzo, parents Pearl and Thomas Lewis, brothers Thomas Lewis, Edward Lewis and Carl Lewis, and sisters Mary Katherine Maple, Maude Chadwell, and Jewel Flippin.

Funeral Information

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 15, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Jonathon Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at St Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Services from 4 until 8 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 3:30.
