Curtis L. Stiening, 86, of North Vernon passed away at 4:45 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2013 at Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus.
Born November 28, 1926 in Jennings County, Curtis was the son of the late James W. and Mary K. Hilbert Stiening. He graduated from Zenas High School and later served his country for 23 years in the United States Army until he retired in 1967. During his time of service he was involved in the European Theater during WWII and married his first wife, Irmgard Andersohn in 1953. After retiring from the Army, Curtis was employed with Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, Maryland before moving to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1976. In 1998, Irmgard preceded him and death. He later married Mary Lou Wilds in 2000 at which time he moved back to North Vernon. Upon return to Jennings County, Curtis had been a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Stiening of North Vernon, a son, James W. Stiening of North Vernon, four step-children, Cindy York and Gary, Greg and Cheryl Wilds, a sister, Ruth Potter of Madison, a brother, Royce Stiening of North Vernon, 16 step-grandchildren, and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irmgard Stiening, a son, Michael Stiening, two sisters, Myrtle Hendricks and Bertie Griner, and three brothers, William, Bob, and Clarence Stiening.
Funeral Information
A funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service in North Vernon with Rev. Connie Barr officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at Bear Creek Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to New Bethel United Methodist Church.
